Collaborating to Improve Farmer Productivity in Ethiopia

Corteva is collaborating with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Feed the Future Ethiopia Alliance program along with ACDI/VOCA, John Deere and Hello Tractor to help improve the productivity, incomes and resilience of smallholder farmers in Ethiopia. Through the program, Corteva will work to increase access to high-yielding drought-tolerant hybrid wheat and maize seed and educate farmers on climate smart sustainable farming practices. The program will leverage US$4 million in USAID funding and benefit 223,800 smallholder farmers, including 58,000 women, on 104,420 hectares of land.
Ethiopia is facing a four-year drought which has accelerated food insecurity for over 13 million people. Corteva has operated for more than two decades in Ethiopia. Through the work of our agronomists, marketers and researchers, we have become a leading supplier of hybrid seeds and crop protection products to over 1.2 million smallholder farmers.
“We have an opportunity to help improve the productivity and incomes of Ethiopian smallholder farmers while addressing the food insecurity challenges in our country,” said Fassil Yilma, Corteva Ethiopia Country Leader “Through our Agricultural Development collaboration, we intend to increase customer adoption of our high-quality seed, improve productivity of targeted farmers by 70 percent and their incomes by 40 percent while advancing sustainable farming practices. These efforts will help to overcome drought-impacted food production, improve community resilience, while addressing policies and market barriers as well as growing our business in an AME priority market.”
