David_Stratham“The Climate Positive Leaders Program will enable us to encourage others to transition to climate positive farming by adopting new practices that ensure complete transparency and understanding of energy and water consumption, as well as environmental impact.”

David Statham operates a 25,000-hectare cotton farming operation west of Moree, New South Wales, Australia. Sitting alongside the national conservation and designated World Heritage site Gwydir Wetlands, David produces both irrigated and dryland traceable cotton, using a zero-to-minimal till approach, integrated pest management, and water use efficiency methods. Supplementing his cotton production with cereal crops, pulse crops, and forage for cattle, he also implements seasonal crop rotation and organic waste composting to increase yield while optimizing his ‘low input, high output’ approach.

David and his team at Sundown Pastoral Company began making environmentally centered practice changes over a decade ago. Advancements in on-farm, assessment mechanisms and biotechnology enable him to achieve his climate positive results in cotton. Factors such as plant selection are critical in improving resource efficiency, as are technologies such as spot spraying with camera technology, advanced telemetry, precision planting and variable rate application of fertilizer. With over 20 years of extensive soil data, David tracks and measures carbon results though detailed daily reporting on-farm, in-depth annual soil testing, and third-party carbon assessments.

All cotton produced can be trace through technology, combining physical and digital traceability with block chain authentication, enabling manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to quantify and audit the fiber with confidence that it is climate positive from source to shelf.

He has expanded his unique climate-positive approach to cotton and will work with a select group of approximately 2,500 smallholder growers in India who are committed to seeing their cotton crop become carbon positive and fully traceable from farm to retail.
