Ravichandran_VanchinathaIyer“All the farming practices I adopt are environmentally friendly and sustainable while being economically beneficial and viable.”

Ravichandran Vanchinatha Iyer farms 45 acres near the Poongulam village in southern state of Tamil Nadu, India, where he produces rice, cotton, pulses, and sugarcane. Leveraging the guidance of agriculture scientists, public and private research institutes, universities, private-sector researchers, and fellow farmer, Ravichandran has focused much of his efforts on growing eco-friendly rice through better irrigation management. By adopting good agronomic practices with more emphasis on drip irrigation methods, improved use of fertilizers, intercropping, and strategic selection of rice varietals, he has demonstrated a 50 percent reduction in water consumption, as well as reducing methane emissions and lessening his carbon footprint.

In addition to field-level activities, Ravichandran also applies a zero plastic waste/zero pollution approach to farming. Where possible, he composts vegetative waste and applies it to his fields as mulch, reducing the use of urea and increasing organic carbon in the soil. A forestry project and crop rotation also enriches the soil and supports carbon sequestration.

Ravichandran actively shares his experiences applying climate positive practices through various agriculture forums. He utilizes social media to provide information to local farmers as well as with leaders and influencers across a wide platform.
